The monsoon floods of 2025 brought unprecedented devastation to several parts of Punjab, particularly the border regions and low-lying rural belts. Torrential rains and overflowing rivers left thousands of families displaced, homes damaged, livestock lost, and livelihoods shattered. Villagers spent days without access to clean drinking water, medical facilities, food supplies, or adequate shelter. For many families, the floods were not merely a natural calamity but a humanitarian crisis that tested their resilience and survival.
In these challenging circumstances, Rotary Club of Mohali Midtown rose to the occasion with compassion, urgency, and unwavering commitment to humanitarian service. Guided by Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, the club undertook a series of meaningful relief initiatives during Rotary Year 2025-26 to support flood-affected brethren across Punjab.
The first major initiative was launched on 29 August 2025, when the club arranged the distribution of clean drinking water to affected families in flood-hit areas. With contamination of water sources becoming a major concern during the disaster, this support proved crucial in preventing water-borne diseases and ensuring immediate relief. The initiative involved assistance worth Rs 86,000 (approximately USD 905).
Recognising the urgent need for wider relief measures, RCMM organised a significant flood relief drive at Dera Baba Nanak on 5 September 2025. Relief material, essential supplies, and humanitarian assistance amounting to Rs 2,25,000 (approximately USD 2,368) were distributed among distressed families. Volunteers and Rotary members worked tirelessly on the ground to ensure that aid reached the most vulnerable sections of society, many of whom had lost nearly everything to the floods.
On the same day, RCMM also extended additional medical assistance worth Rs 15,000 (approximately USD 158) for flood victims requiring emergency healthcare support. Flood situations often lead to outbreaks of infections, fever, and other health concerns, making timely medical intervention extremely important. The club’s support helped provide medicines and healthcare assistance to those in immediate need.
As winter approached and many displaced families continued to struggle with rehabilitation, the club once again stepped forward. On 27 December 2025, RCMM organised a blanket distribution drive for flood-affected persons, extending warmth and comfort during the harsh winter season. Relief worth Rs 75,000 (approximately USD 789) was distributed among needy families, bringing much-needed relief to those still recovering from the disaster.
These humanitarian initiatives were made possible through the collective efforts and generous contributions of Rotary members, donors, and supporters. Special appreciation is due to MIA for its substantial support towards the relief efforts. A noteworthy contribution also came from Rtn. Krishna Birdy, who donated Rs 1,00,000 (approximately USD 1,053) specifically towards rehabilitation initiatives in the border areas affected by the floods.
In another exemplary act of service, financial assistance of approximately Rs 10 lakhs (approximately USD 10,526) was provided to flood-affected persons in Village Bahupur, District Sultanpur Lodhi, through the Central Relief & Welfare Trust, Jamshedpur, with coordination and facilitation by RCMM. This support significantly aided families attempting to rebuild their lives and restore a sense of normalcy after immense loss.
The flood relief efforts undertaken during the year stand as a shining example of Rotary’s enduring commitment to humanity. Beyond financial assistance and material support, these initiatives conveyed hope, solidarity, and compassion to countless families during one of the most difficult periods of their lives. Through dedicated service and collective action, RCMM demonstrated that even in the face of adversity, the spirit of Rotary continues to illuminate lives and strengthen communities.
